United Federation Marine Lance Corporal Tamara Veal catches the attention of recruiters who nominate her to serve as a Single Combat Specialist. Gladiators, as they are better known, are genetically modified human champions who meet Klethos d’relle in the combat ring when the Klethos issue a challenge for a human world. Win, and the planet stays in human possession; lose, and not only do they lose their lives, but the world as well. With the Klethos much more advanced and militarily powerful, able to defeat humanity in an all-out war, the challenge ring is the only way to retain at least some of the worlds of man.

While life as a gladiator is full of celebrity status and the gratitude of humanity, it comes with a heavy price. Not only is there the real risk of death in the ring, if a gladiator survives that, the “Brick,” or Boosted Regeneration Cancer, will claim her life within a few years.

Lance Corporal Veal, who has found a home in the Marines, has to decide whether to accept the nomination. She would have to leave her brothers and sisters in the Corps, be assigned to the combined human gladiator course, and undergo extreme genetic modification that will leave her almost unrecognizable from the woman she was before. Becoming a gladiator will enable her to serve humanity to a far greater extent than anything else she could do as a Marine grunt, but at a tremendous personal cost.

Author’s note For those readers familiar with my other Marine-related books, this one is a little different in that there is far less combat action, particularly from a Marine unit standpoint. This novel, which is the first of three planned books that follow three different women serving as United Federation Marines or as a Navy corpsman, is more about duty, sacrifice, and what it means to serve in defense of others.

Relatively fast read, but the editor/proofreaders definitely did NOT do their jobs. There are so many misspellings and wrong words ('is' instead of 'in', 'of' instead of 'on', and my particular pet peeve, 'breath' instead of 'breathe'.) Even the main characters names' are misspelled at least once.

Also, the characters were very one-dimentional. This coming from someone who doesn't really bother with things like that in movies or books as long as they entertain me. The only time I felt any connection to the main character was in the LAST two chapters where she actually developed some depth. The story itself is pretty blah except for the scenes of and around the fights.

Another thing that bothered me and pulled me from the story is that there were footnotes. It's easily possible to explain an acronym within the story without the reader needing to look at the bottom of the page. I would expect that from a scientific journal or, in this case, a military instructional, not a fictional book.

All in all, it was simply an ok book, but with the writing errors and inability to flesh out the characters, I won't be buying any more from this author.

Gladiator Women of the United Federation Marines Book 1 eBook Jonathan P Brazee Reviews

The story of a female gladiator. Exciting and with some great space opera flair.. The only drawback and an irritating one, was the large number of typos and spelling mistakes. Time to hire a new proof reader.
I read the book pretty much nonstop, something I only do with really good books. The book wasn't what I had expected it to be, I will not spoil the ending though. There were some minor editing issues, but nothing serious.
Read the book, it is about honor and loyalty. Semper Fi.
I absolutely hate to give 5 stars because so many of them are written by friends of the Author in order to help him/her sell more books.

I have previously criticized Col Brazee for not getting an important female character right and for concentrating on the wrong details. Col Brazee got this one right.

More than getting it right, Col Brazee came up with some thoughts about having Champions fight single combat instead of having devastating wars. This was an ancient custom long before the Bible's "David and Goliath." The Col came up with some interesting thoughts that hadn't occurred to me on that subject
The author knows his material (being a retired USMC). And the translates extremely well; into the first half of the book. The second half of the book is very story short. And at the very end, some ideas are brought up which would indicate that more was planed; but then the book ends. I was wondering if there would be any surprise twists, but no; just a character satisfying conclusion.
I look forward to the rest of the trilogy. There were a few more nor grammar errors but otherwise it was a great story. The gladiators were well developed characters. The background on the genomes was just right, not to much detail yet enough to explain the conversion of the canidates. I will recommend this.
As a former jarhead from the days when they issued M1s and we had our own serial numbers, I have read most of the Brazee books. They are not stellar literature but they are accurate and workmanlike. Good value for the money. This one, however was better. It made me both laugh out loud and have tears in my eyes and it illuminated very well the way Marines think and act.
This book is a little bit different from the other UFMC stories not in a better or worse sense. This book is a stand alone story that looks deeply into the personal motivations of the main character and could be applied to service members of the past, present and future because they all share the same sense of Duty, Honor, and Sacrifice. I would recommend this book to anyone who's into science fiction or military fiction I think there's something for everyone to enjoy
